Valley of flowers National Park is the
sound care zone of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserves. The Credit for the
discovery of the valley of flowers generally goes to the British mountaineers
Frank S. smythe and R.L. Holdsworth who incidentally recharge this valley after
a successful expedition of mount Kamet 1931. Fascinated by its beauty and grandeur. Frank S. Smythe
revisited this area in 1937 and published a book named "Valley of
flowers" 1938. But according to Sharma (1985) it was colonel Eelmund
Smythe and explorer and education officer in the Indian Army who had visited
this valley much earlier i.e. 1862. The valley of flowers lilies in main valleys of
Alaknanda and Laxman Ganga in the Garhwal Himalays in Chamoli district of
Uttaranchal. River Pushpawati flows through this valley which has it's sower in
the Tipra Glacier that extends upto Ghari Prabat Peak. It is a flat valley 5 km
long nd 2 km wide. It's altitudinal range varies from 3200 to 6675 mtr. The
park of surrounded by Gawi Parbat (6590m) and Ratabaan (6126m) in the east,
Kuntkaal (4430m) in the west saptsveing (5030m) in the south and Neelgiri
Parvat (6479m) in the north. The valley of flowers national Park lies between
300 41 - 30048 N . and longitude 79033- E.Valley of
flowers is a trek of about 25 Km distance
from Joshimath Is Govindghat. From Govindghat one has to trek 13 Km. to
reach Ghangaria from Ghangaria the valley situated at a distance 3 Km. The valley remains open for
visitors for 1st June to31st October.
